Continuing its winning streak, both on the local and international front, Perdeberg Wines was recently honoured at the annual China Wine & Spirits Awards (CWSA) with a Double Gold, two Golds and two Bronze medals.
This year the Double Gold was awarded to The Dry Land Collection Tenacious Shiraz 2018, which has seen the same varietal walk away with this prestigious title in previous years. This reaffirms the organisation’s commitment to continue producing wines of premium quality to be enjoyed throughout the world. The Dry Land Collection is made from grapes cultivated in vineyards that receive little to no irrigation, also known as ‘dryland’ vineyards, the range showcases the uniqueness of wines grown in this terroir using age-old traditions.
A modern-day Shiraz, the Tenacious Shiraz 2018 is a fine example of wine made under dryland conditions. As is the case when using small berries, this wine shows a voluptuous bouquet and a rich aftertaste, leaving you with much food for thought. The nose is spicy with nuances of white pepper, cloves, fresh tobacco and violets. On the palate, you get tones of mulberries, cherries and fynbos, while the structure is broad with delicate tannins and fresh aftermath.
Although the Shiraz was the ‘star of the show, three other wines in The Dry Land Collection also impressed the judges. Gold was awarded to The Dry Land Collection Courageous Old Vine Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2021, with Bronze going to The Dry Land Collection Conqueror Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 and The Dry Land Collection Resolve Pinotage 2019, respectively. The second Gold medal was awarded to The Vineyard Collection Chenin Blanc 2021.
The CWSA is the biggest and most prestigious wine competition in Hong Kong and China. Its judges – people in the Chinese wine off-trade and hospitality markets – are all key decision makers in the fast-growing Chinese market. The CWSA are the only awards in the world judged specifically for the Chinese market and are entirely focused on consumer preferences and demand. The CWSAs are unique in that they are open for entry by both producers and distributors looking to enter and succeed in China.
