Established in 2014, the Gold Wine Awards was born out of a need to help the consumer make educated buying decisions and to help premium quality wines sell. This year Perdeberg stood out as one of these ‘must have’ wines, scooping no less than three Double Gold and three Gold medals, as well as being named as one of their Top 10 Producers (for the second year in a row). The winners were announced at a special event in September.
Double Gold was awarded to The Vineyard Collection Grenache Blanc 2022, Perdeberg Classic Collection Sparkling Rosé 2022 and the Perdeberg SSR Soft Smooth Rosé 2022. Not far behind Gold went to The Vineyard Collection Cinsault 2021, Perdeberg Classic Collection Chenin Blanc 2022 and the Lighthearted Low Alcohol Cinsault Rosé 2022.
The Vineyard Collection Grenache Blanc 2022, which was categorised as a Smaller White Wine, was the top value scorer in this class.
This year’s panellists were selected with extensive retail experience and comprised of people in the industry that make their living from understanding the flavour profiles and price points of the wines they need to stock. By partnering with industry doorkeepers, the Gold Wine Awards are keeping pace with the people monitoring the consumer’s pulse.
The panel consisted of retail veterans Karel Wegner from GetWine, Rebecca Constable from Woolworths (chairperson), Sue Proudfoot from Wine Concepts, Lisa du Toit from Urban Wines, sommeliers Joseph Dhafana and Gregory Mutambe, as well as regular taster for Wine of the Month Club, Jacques Lombard owner of Wine brands, and Wanda Cronje CWM. These award-winning wines are also available at selected liquor outlets nationwide.
